Amazon has nothing on the U.S. Postal Service. Think drone delivery is farfetched? On June 8, 1959, in a move that Postmaster General Arthur A. Summerfield heralded as “of historic significance to the peoples of the entire world,” the Navy submarine USS Barbero, situated off the coast, fired a guided missile carrying 3,000 letters toward the naval auxiliary air station in Mayport, Florida. Recently, Bill Taylor published a post on the Harvard Business Review Blog Network about difficulties of innovating in a company with a long history of success. Much of what he wrote struck a chord with me. READ MORE >> |

A surefire way to send someone running away at any gathering is to talk about the post office. Yet while it may be boring, the health of the U.S. Postal Service is important to our industry. That’s why a good portion of the Fall 2013 Envelope Manufacturers Association (EMA) meeting was devoted to postal affairs, beginning with a presentation from Postmaster General Patrick Donahoe. I’ve reviewed thousands of resumes during my career. It amazes me how poorly many people represent themselves. January 26, 2014 is the date. Mailings entered on that date and later will need to be Full-Service to get automation postage rates. I would bet everyone reading this blog is aware of that, but there is still a large percentage of mailings today that are not Full-Service. Approximately 55% of commercial mailers are Full-Service right now according to USPS management. That number is surprising since we are only a few short months away. READ MORE >> |

We get better when we push the limits of our abilities. Dr. Spock from Star Trek would say, “This is logical.” Trying something new out of our comfort zone can be nerve-wracking. Anxiety is part of it and we often shy away from activities that make us uncomfortable. What many do not see, however, is the huge upside for us when we put ourselves out there. READ MORE >> |

I came across a Ted Talk by Derek Sivers a couple of years ago. I enjoy going back to “Leadership Lessons from Dancing Guy” from time to time since, in just under three minutes, Sivers explains more about leadership than any management book I’ve read. READ MORE >> |
