As a wholesale supplier, we understand that our customers prefer to market our products with their own brand. To do so is simple:
We get better when we push the limits of our abilities. Dr. Spock from Star Trek would say, “This is logical.” Trying something new out of our comfort zone can be nerve-wracking. Anxiety is part of it and we often shy away from activities that make us uncomfortable. What many do not see, however, is the huge upside for us when we put ourselves out there.
I base this on observations made in over 40 years working in business--39 of those with Western States. The most successful people I know have endured knee-knocking experiences throughout their careers. Because they volunteered to be team leader, talk in front of a group of customers or peers, or take a leadership role in a trade organization, they have placed themselves in situations to receive off-the-job training. Some might call it trial-by-fire. I can’t remember the number of times I have heard somebody being honored for their service say, “I have received more out of serving you than I have put into it.”
Those people recognize the tremendous benefits of self-improvement they have earned by doing things outside their comfort zone. Why do we often see these same people volunteering? We encourage our sales people to participate in local organizations and ask them to present at our meetings to gain experience.
The best thing you can do for yourself is take the initiative and volunteer to present on a topic of importance to your peers or customers. Join a local organization and volunteer to work on a committee. I like the phrase that says we are all lifelong learners. I am a strong believer because I have seen the results first hand. Push the envelope. (I couldn’t resist that.) There is no real self-improvement without work or risk.
