1. Communicate. Any successful relationship is grounded in good communication. Not only is it important to create newsletters and other mediums that inform customers about your company; it’s important to listen to what they have to say.
2. Serve. “Quality customer service” is an abstract phrase everyone says but no one relates to. Invest in taking care of your customers the way you’d want to be taken care of. Always think about what’s important to them in your transactions.
3. Invest. Where there’s customer loyalty, there’s employee loyalty—it’s that simple. Invest in your employees’ professional needs (training, etc.), be competent and remember that a little respect makes a big difference.
4. Motivate. Create a loyalty purchase program that provides membership in an exclusive group that receives immediate news and ideas to help build their business. Also offer them free samples of new product ideas that enable them to expand their current offerings. Research how they may be more profitable and ways to expand their business in order to find additional motivators to add to the program. Incentives and information give customers a good reason to do business with you repeatedly.
5. Name. Whenever possible, have all employees address regular customers by name. It shows that they’re important and respected in your business.
